Getting Some Career Head Space — 10 Questions to Pause + Reflect on Your Career

If you’re like us, you have Headspace (or some comparable meditation app) downloaded onto your phone. You started off strong, with daily morning sessions, have since faltered, but refuse to admit defeat and delete the app (you got us, subscription model). We’ll save the “don’t be discouraged, get back on the horse” article for someone else.

Today we’re going to encourage you to try out a different kind of reflection, one focused 100% on your career. Introducing the Career Head Space.

Here are 10 questions to spark your thinking on that thing you will spend ⅓ of your life on — your career.

  1. What are you most proud of that you accomplished this year?

  2. What projects at work get you in the “flow” state— the state where time flies and you’re hyper focused and engaged with your work? What projects at work get you into the “clogged-flow” state (yeah, we made that up)— the state where you’re hiding in the bathroom on Instagram to delay getting started on the dreaded task?

  3. When you go home for the holidays, are you excited to answer the “How’s work” question? What projects are you excited to talk about?

  4. How much of that kind of work are you actually doing?

  5. Are you proud to tell your grandparents, parents, in-laws or family-dog what you do for a living?

  6. What did you learn and how did you grow this year?

  7. List three tangible skills you picked up.Jot down your typical day. How do you spend your hours at work? What percentage of your day is spent answering emails, meeting with clients, brainstorming with team members, playing Candy Crush?

  8. Slightly morbid but this question came up on a recent lighthouse panel — if you were to write your obituary, what would that look like?

  9. On a scale of 1–10, how excited are you to go to your holiday party and spend some out-of-office time with your colleagues?

  10. What are you most excited about from a career perspective in 2019?

We hope you enjoyed this exercise and if you’re not happy with your answers, check out thelighthouse.
